What you'll do
Our Shore2Shore Excursions guide will meet you at the Port of Valencia where we board an air conditioned coach to take a guided tour of the beautiful Valencia.
Our excursion will take us along the old course of the Turia river (today Jardín del Turia, with buildings of interest such as the City of Arts and Sciences and the Palacio de la Música), with its ancient bridges and the most contemporary ones such as the Peineta de Santiago Calatrava and the one of the Flowers.
We will visit the Base facilities of the Copa America for the participants of the 32nd edition held in 2007, and the 33rd edition held in February 2010. Building "Veles i Vents", modernist sheds, interior dock of the port of Valencia, beaches, etc.
We will see part of the urban circuit of Formula 1, which runs along the base of the Copa America, the rotating bridge (on the new channel) and we will arrive at the Barrio de Nazaret.
We will then reach the historic center of Valencia to discover the beauty of the main monuments:
The Cathedral: we will visit the interior, (built in the 13th century, on the great mosque). It does not belong to a unitary or dominant style. Its languages range from Romanesque to Neoclassical. It houses objects and paintings of great interest such as the Holy Grail, two paintings by Goya and the Renaissance frescoes of the vault of the main altar (twelve angels with musical instruments).
The Basilica de la Virgen de los Desamparados: Patroness of the city. Located in the square of its same name, on the forum of Roman Valencia. Baroque construction of great singularity. Elliptical floor covered by a dome decorated with frescoes by Antonio Palomino.
The Plaza de la Virgen (foundation of the city and its history, excavations of the Almoina, Tribunal de las Aguas and Palace of the Generalitat). The Tower of Quart (15th century) and the Towers of Serrano (14th century). Both towers were used as prisons during the wars.
El Palacio del Marqués de Dos Aguas, National Museum of Ceramics: built in the s. XV and reformed in 1740. Its main facade stands out in alabaster stone. It houses the National Museum of Ceramics of Don Manuel González Martí, the carriage of the Nymphs and the Furniture of Dresden, reconstruction of an old Valencian kitchen.
The typical Plaza Redonda: known as "el clot" (the hole), it is one of the most curious interventions of the s. XIX Nearby is the CHURCH OF SANTA CATALINA whose construction dates back to the Reconquest. The bell tower, baroque, from the s. XVII, is perhaps the most remarkable of the set and offers one of the most beautiful urban perspectives of Valencia.
La Lonja de Mercaderes: one of the most representative buildings of civil Gothic in Europe, from the s. XV Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1996.
The Central Market: building of modernist style (1914-1928). It is one of the largest in Europe exceeding 8000 m2. During the walking tour we will see some facades of churches such as Santos Juanes, located inside the Mercat neighborhood. This church was considered as a second cathedral in importance.
We will then return to the Port of Valencia so you can re-join your ship for onward passage to your next port of call.
