Skjolden, Scenic Route Jotunheimen and Sognefjellet

Shore excursion from port of Skjolden, Norway

  • Duration 3h
  • Activity level medium

What you'll do

Welcome at the port by our English-speaking guide with a Shorexc sign.

We will explore the surroundings of Jotunheimen National Park, which extends over approximately 1,200 square kilometers (wilderness occupies most of the country).

The Sognefjell mountain pass is the highest road in Norway and Northern Europe; it rises to 1434 meters above sea level. The landscape offers magnificent views of Jotunheimen National Park which is home to twenty-seven of the highest peaks in Norway. The two-lane road is more than a hundred kilometers long and is one of the most spectacular in Europe, offering views of multiple glaciers and countless peaks. Connecting east and west, we will be able to observe, along its route, the “Varders”, a sort of stone pyramid indicating places of safe passage for walkers and caravanners who once crossed the region.

The road was opened to cars in 1938, after two years of work where around two hundred young people worked in adverse weather conditions. During the winter, the pass is closed due to snow and extreme weather conditions.

The scenery along the route is varied along winding climbs in Sognefjellet Mountain. On the plateau we will have free time to walk around, enjoy the panorama, pick some berries and take photos.

Return to Skjolden port for ship departure.
