Alta is the largest city in Finnmark, with 19,000 inhabitants. It has three main centers: Bossekop, Elvebakken in the east part part of town, with the airport and port, and Bukta. Bossekop became a commercial town in 1791 and Sami people come here twice a year for the markets in December and March. Although Alta is located at 70º north, the valley is covered with pine forests and fertile soil. In fact, it is the northest area where you can grow barley.
Today's excursion will we takes us around Alta beauties and visit the Cathedral of the Aurora Borealis inside.
The City Council wanted a new cathedral to become a landmark building from the architectural point of view, the dynamic contours of the new church going up in a spiral, culminating with the tip of the clock tower 47 meters above the ground, resembling movements of the elusive Aurora Borealis.
The Cathedral of the Aurora Borealis in Alta, is an architectural work that is worth visiting. The design of the cathedral is a mixture of nature and local culture. The building is a landmark that symbolizes the extraordinary natural phenomenon of the Aurora Borealis.
The facade, covered with titanium, reflects the aurora borealis during the long dark periods of the Arctic winter.
We will do a sightseeing of the city with stops for photos.
