What you'll do

Lucca is a walled city where its medieval past meets culture and modern life. You can visit this wonderful city with this special excursion for cruise passengers, from the stopover in the port of Livorno, where our tour assistant will wait for you after the arrival of your cruise.

The trip to Lucca by bus takes about an hour. We will start our tour with the guide along the Via San Paolino. Here we can admire the birthplace of one of the best-known Italian opera composers: Giacomo Puccini. In Piazza Cittadella you will find the statue of the creator of La bohème, Tosca, Madame Butterfly and Turandot.

We will continue our visit through the Piazza San Michele, an ancient Roman forum, where the Church of San Michele is located, a classic example of Pisan-Luchese architecture, the Praetorian Palace from 1492 and the current headquarters of the Podestá.

Passing through the central square of the city, Piazza Napoleone, we will arrive at the Duomo and you will be able to contemplate the majestic work of Jacopo Della Quercia: the tomb of Ilaria Del Carretto, the second wife of Paolo Guinigi, lord of Lucca between the years 1400 and 1430, and a great artistic promoter.

The excursion will take you through the charming streets of Lucca, and through its medieval stamp between palaces and towers. One of the most important, and stamp of the city of Lucca, is the Giuingi Tower which is recognized by its trees at the top of the tower.

We will also walk through the Piazza Dell’Anfiteatro, one of the best known in Italy. The amphitheater square was built by the Romans in the 1st century and was typically used to hold public meetings. In the Middle Ages, the ruins of the amphitheater were used to build new houses, but it maintains its original shape. The ancient Roman remains can still be recognized from the outside.
In addition, you'll also have free time to explore on your own, eat, rest, and shop around the area.

There is the possibility of visiting the old walls that border the city on your own which remained intact during its expansion and modernization. These fortifications are a symbol of this Italian city, and maintain its identity, offering the same appearance as in the 15th century. We will meet at the time established by the guide in Piazza Verdi, where we will get on the bus heading back to the Livorno cruise port, for boarding and end the excursion.
