Athens from Lavrio port

Shore excursion from port of Lavrio, Greece

  • Duration 8h
  • Activity level medium

What you'll do

Upon arrival of your cruise ship, your guide will be waiting for you at the port, identified with the Shorexc sign.

Starting from the port we will make the panoramic tour passing through the village of Lavrio, a coastal village 60 km southeast of Athens, it is the port for Ferries going to Kea and Kythnos islands and for high season catamarans to the Western Cyclades. It has a great industrial past, from silver mining in ancient times to the massive steam mining works of the late 19th century.

We will head to Athens via the major highway Attiki Odos, it is a main artery that runs through the entire city and into the center of Athens.

Arriving in Athens we will continue our panoramic tour passing by Vasileos Sofias Avenue, which is lined with neoclassical buildings and houses embassies, museums and public ministries. We will see the Constitution Square in front of the Palace where the Monument to the Unknown Soldier is located and where two soldiers are permanently on guard.

Then we will pass by the famous neoclassical trilogy; the University, the Academy and the Library. We will continue by bus to the Olympieion (the temple of Olympian Zeus) dating from the 6th century BC, one of the largest temples in the Corinthian style, and the Zapion, which is located within the National Gardens. We will see the Hadrian's Arch (2nd century A.D.) that divided the ancient city from the Roman city of Hadrian, the statue of Lord Byron, where we will see the Presidential Palace built by Otto I of Bavaria and which today is the seat of Parliament.

In Athens, cradle of European civilization for twenty-five centuries, the panoramic view of the city is dominated by the rock of the Acropolis. We will go up to visit it (entrance fee to be paid on site) and admire the main buildings that compose it: the Propylaea, the Temple of Athena Nike, the Erechtheion and the magnificent Parthenon.

Before returning to the port of Lavrio, we can visit the ancient area of Athens called Plaka, where we will have free time (depending on the permanence of the ship in port) to shop, taste the Greek cuisine, or visit with the same ticket of the entrance to the Acropolis, the Temple of Zeus and the first theater of European civilization, the Theater of Dionysus.

Located 300 meters from the Acropolis, is the New Acropolis Museum, which you can visit for free (tickets to be paid on site).

Returning to the port of Lavrio we will cross the avenue Vasileos Konstantinou where is the stadium of Panathinaikos, also known as Kalimarmaro, which was promoted by Lycurgus in the fourth century BC and rebuilt in 1896 according to its original plan. This is where the Olympic flame is carried every four years.
