What you'll do
Our guide will meet you at the port of Sarande.
Departure for the city of Butrint. On the way you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view of the Corfu Channel and its many coves.
Butrint is located on south Albanian coast, on a peninsula between Lake Butrint and the Ionian Sea, opposite the island of Corfu, near the town of Sarande.
Dating from prehistoric times, it was a Greek colony and then a Roman city. Abandoned after the Venetian occupation until 1928, it was "rediscovered" after excavations that updated a fifth of the city.
We will start our walking tour of the site, considered one of the most important archaeological sites of Albania. One of the parts dating from the 8th and 10th centuries BC goes back to the Greek colony near Corfu. Originally, Butrint was originally dedicated to providing food to Corfu. From the 4th century (Hellenistic period), it occupied a more important place in the trade. From this period date the most beautiful remains of the city, such as the Greek Theater and the Acropolis which houses a temple dedicated to Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine or the Lion's Gate, one of the six entrances to the city.
After the conquest of the city by the Romans in the second century, Butrinto developed with the construction of a port. Nearby are a Roman bath, a palace, a temple, the old forum. At the beginning of the 5th century the baptistery was built. Circular in shape, it is one of the most beautiful legacies of primitive Christian art in Europe. The oldest remains of the site are cyclopean stone walls that originally protected the city.
In 1992, UNESCO declared the ruins of the city and its surroundings world heritage. In 2000, the Albanian government established the Butrint National Park, which protects 29 square kilometers of territory of great historical, archaeological and ecological value near the archaeological site of Butrint.
